Managing a business in uncertain times

Uncertainty and risk have been ever-present in human history – as have human attempts to predict and control what happens next. But in the globalised, interconnected, fast-moving 21st century, business leaders are wrestling with radical uncertainty and complexity. The global financial crisis of 2008 caught governments, regulatory bodies, businesses and financial markets completely off guard and threw economies around the world into a tailspin. While many financial markets have recovered, complexity and uncertainty are increasing. Central bankers and governments are adding regulation in attempting to exert more control over the global financial system, long standing geopolitical and economic givens are being tested, and big data and AI are starting to replace human decision-making, opening up unimaginable possibilities. For today’s business leaders, there is no chance of certainty about the shape of markets, firms, products, or even the nature of what work means in years to come. So how do we approach management in a world like this?
Please join Anne Richards (MBA 82J), Chief Executive of M&G Investments and Deputy Chief Executive, M&G Prudential, as she explores the challenges of managing a business in these uncertain times from both the perspective of a business leader and an institutional investor. What can leaders do to build resilient organisations that not only survive but have the possibility to thrive in such turbulent times?
Anne began her career at the nuclear research organisation CERN before working for the technology consultancy Cambridge Consultants. Her career in finance began with Alliance Capital in 1992 and continued with roles at JPMorgan, Mercury and Edinburgh Fund Managers where she was Chief Investment Officer. Following Aberdeen Asset Management’s acquisition of Edinburgh Fund Managers in 2003, she took on the role of CIO for Aberdeen and later became head of the EMEA region.
Anne is Vice Convener of the Court of Edinburgh University, Chair of the CERN & Society Foundation and Chair of the Financial Conduct Authority Practitioner Panel. She is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, an Honorary Fellow of the CFA Institute (UK) and holds an honorary degree from Heriot-Watt University. Anne is also on the Board of Leaders of 2020 Women on Boards. She is also on the Steering Committee of the 30% Club. Anne was appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in 2014, and a CBE in 2015, for services to the financial services industry and voluntary service. In 2017, Anne was placed at Number 47 on the Fortune Most Powerful Women International List and also made Financial News 100 Most Influential Women in Finance.
